About DevOps (Docker, etc.)

DevOps is a set of practices that combine software development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops) to improve the speed, efficiency, and quality of software delivery. devOps breaks down traditional silos between development and operations teams to promote a culture of collaboration, automation, and continuous improvement culture.

The main principles of DevOps are as follows

Continuous Integration and Delivery (CI/CD). Developers and operations personnel work together to automate the software delivery pipeline so that code can be tested, integrated, and deployed as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Infrastructure as code (IaC): Manage and provision infrastructure with code. Manage and provision infrastructure with code to enable more efficient and reliable application deployment.
Monitoring and Logging : DevOps teams prioritize real-time monitoring and logging to quickly identify and fix problems.
Collaboration and Communication: DevOps promotes a culture of collaboration and communication between development, operations, and other stakeholders, breaking down traditional silos and enabling faster, more efficient software delivery.

DevOps has become increasingly popular in recent years among organizations seeking to improve their software development processes and deliver high-quality applications faster and more reliably.

The following pages of this blog provide an overview of this DevOps technology and specific implementations such as Docker.

Technical Details

Domain-Driven Design (DDD) is a software design methodology based on an understanding of the business domain. This section describes DDD.

Docker provides a mechanism to immediately run applications as containers, saving as much labor as possible from complex human manual work such as OS installation, which is done manually in conventional hypervisor-based virtualization infrastructures. In addition, it has features such as automated application construction, emphasized operation of multiple containers, disposal of software components, and shortened time for development and production environment construction, which enables a level of efficiency unmatched by conventional virtualization infrastructures.

Thus, the so-called “container revolution” that began in 2013 is now riding a major wave of “post-virtualization” in Europe and the United States, and various advanced vendors are working hard to develop peripheral software and provide services based on Docker.

Container infrastructure based on Docker will become an essential elemental technology in fields where software development capabilities are key, such as artificial intelligence, IoT, and big data. The adoption of “advanced technology that brings certainty with flexibility and speed” is essential to winning the global development race, and the open source community and leading companies in Europe and the United States are making daily efforts to use confident IT such as Docker to generate profits for their companies. They fully understand that their businesses cannot grow if they use the same technology as before.

In the previous article, we discussed container orchestration, which is expected to be an important part of the process, as well as the steps companies are taking to become cloud-native. However, a major challenge in implementing cloud-native will be the environmental dependence on cloud technology. For example, when using a specific cloud vendor service, the application architecture is forced to change depending on the functionality and service level of that service. This means that no matter how much cloud computing is used, it is not always possible to respond quickly to business changes.

One reason container technology is attracting attention is its freedom from such vendor dependence. Its technical elements utilize Linux Kernel functions and are not significantly different from conventional application execution environments. However, the first step toward cloud nativity lies in the fact that the cloud can be used without being occupied by a specific vendor, thanks to the standardization of container technology.

The first item to consider when introducing Docker is whether Docker is necessary for your company in the first place. Docker provides various functions for managing containers, but it is necessary to understand the advantages and disadvantages of Docker compared to existing virtual environments.

For example, most hypervisor-based virtualization software provides a live migration function that allows users to move a guest OS to another physical machine while it is still running, but Docker does not provide a live migration function as a standard feature. However, Docker does not provide a live migration feature as a standard feature, so it is not possible to move a running container to a different machine.

In this article, we will describe how to install and configure Docker, download Laravel Sail, and run Laravel.

Microservices need to be packaged as self-contained artifacts that can be replicated and deployed with a single command. The service also needs to have a short startup time and be lightweight so that it can be up and running within seconds. Containers can be deployed quickly due to their inherent implementation compared to setting up a bare-metal machine with a host OS and the necessary dependencies. In addition, packaging microservices within containers allows for a faster and more automated transition from development to production. Therefore, it is recommended that microservices be packaged in containers.

Terraform will be an open source tool for automating cloud infrastructure and other IT resources Terraform allows you to create, modify, and version resources in a programmable way.

Kubernetes will be an open source orchestration tool for managing applications running on Docker and other container runtimes Kubernetes allows you to deploy, scale, and manage applications across multiple nodes and failover with ease.

Git is a source code version control system that allows multiple people to work on a project at the same time, keeping track of the project’s changelog. This section provides an overview of Git, how to get started, environment settings, basic commands, and reference books.
