Writing papers/reports
There are many steps involved in writing a paper or report, including
- Selecting a Topic First, decide on the topic you wish to write about. In doing so, it is advisable to choose a field in which you are interested or in which you have expertise. It is also important to choose a theme that is in line with advances in research and the needs of society.Furthermore, when selecting a theme, it is necessary to clarify the issue. There are various methods for analyzing the problem, which are described in detail in “Problem Solving Methods, Thinking Processes, and Experimental Design.
- Survey/Research The next step is to conduct a survey/research on the chosen topic. This includes literature review, experiments, surveys, etc. Gather the necessary information, and analyze and interpret it in your own way.
Technical theory and applications in the area of artificial intelligence and machine learning are discussed in “Machine Learning Technology,” “Artificial Intelligence Technology,” and “ICT Technology.” You can also refer to “Collecting AI Conference Papers” for a vast collection of papers in specific areas of AI scholarship.
- Creating an outline Based on the results of the survey/research, an outline (rough structure) for the paper or report should be created. In this process, it is important to clearly define the chapters, the order of chapters, and the claims and rationale.
For details on how to write an outline, please refer to “How to Write a Paper or Proposal Based on Paragraph Writing and Issue Analysis.
- Prepare a Draft Based on the outline, prepare a draft. In doing so, write logically, being aware of the flow of the text, vocabulary, and grammar. In addition, when citing citations, it is necessary to cite them in an appropriate format.
For more information on how to write papers in English, especially for overseas conferences, please refer to “How to Get Published: Submitting Your Paper – YouTube.
- Review and Revision Once the draft is complete, request a review and get a third-party opinion. At that time, listen to their advice and suggestions, and revise the text as necessary. For more information on peer review, please refer to “Understanding the peer review process”
. - Formatting Finally, format the layout and bibliography of your paper or report according to the specified format. In doing so, follow the instructions and adjust fonts, font size, margins, etc. Use Latex, a standard tool, to prepare the paper in the paper format. These are described in “Tex/Latex, the world’s standard tool for writing dissertations, and Mathjax, a web-based mathematical equation display tool.
This blog will provide details below on how to write this paper/report.
Problem solving methods and thinking and experimental design
This presentation will cover the basic concept of problem solving, various methods of problem analysis, hypothesis formulation and estimation for problem solving, and specific steps of problem solving.
Next, we will discuss the “billiard method” of problem analysis, which is a method for analyzing problems, the systems thinking approach, and the KPI, KGI, OKR, and other methods that are often used in corporate improvement activities.
Next, we will discuss Fermi estimation for quantifying issues and target values, and then we will discuss deduction, induction, projection, analogy, abduction, and other reasoning methods for formulating hypotheses to solve problems, followed by methods for verifying these hypotheses without falling into the “confirmation bypass”.
Finally, PDCA, a specific problem-solving approach, and the concept of experimentation within PDCA are described based on causal inference methods.
In the following pages of this blog, we describe these problem-solving techniques, thinking methods, and experimental designs in detail.

This article discusses how to write a thesis or proposal based on paragraph writing and issue analysis from “Thesis Classroom: From Report to Thesis. This book is written by Kazuhisa Todayama, the author of “Making a Thesis”. Since Todayama is a researcher whose main field of study is analytical philosophy, he takes a slightly different approach to “thesis” than other books on how to write a thesis.
When you submit your article to a journal, you often need to include a cover letter. This is a great opportunity to highlight to the journal editor what makes your research new and important. The cover letter should explain why your work is perfect for their journal and why it will be of interest to the journal’s readers.
