ISWC2016 papers

From ISWC2016, an international conference on Semantic Web technologies, one of the artificial intelligence technologies for handling knowledge information. Previously, we discussed ISWC2015.

ISWC was held at the Kobe International Conference Center for five days from October 17 to 21, 2016, and the Resources Track invited oral presentations on resource sharing that contributes to the research community. Typical examples of resources are datasets, ontologies, services, benchmarks, etc., but ontology design patterns, workflows, methodologies, etc., are also eligible. resources Track is peer-reviewed in four categories: value, reusability, design and technical quality, and availability. 71 submissions were received and 24 were accepted>.

The Applications Track called for papers on applications in use, business cases, prototypes that could be deployed in the real world, etc. Papers submitted to the Applications Track should describe the motivation for development, contributions to semantic technology, actual use cases, knowledge gained from the use cases, and implementation details. We received 43 submissions and 12 were accepted.

The session time was set for each theme, and oral presentations were made according to the theme regardless of the division. The themes covered a wide range of topics, including Linked Data, Ontology, Inference, Query, Search, Natural Language Processing, Knowledge Graphs, and Smart Planet.

One of the trends in the papers is that the number of papers that include the word ontology is increasing again. In the beginning, Semantic Web researches were mostly top-down approaches, and ontologies emphasized the reasoning aspect. In contrast, Linked Data, which has emerged in the past 10 years, is a bottom-up approach where data is first put on the Web so that others can use it, and then each person connects the data where it can be connected. At present, I think that ontology is being reexamined as a means to improve the data and to organize them in a better way.

The individual presentations are described below.
