When designing AI systems,
most discussions focus on a single question:

What can AI do?

However, in real systems,
there is a far more important question.

That question is:

Where should AI stop?

AI can

  • predict

  • reason

  • optimize

But AI cannot stop itself.

AI simply generates
the output with the highest probability.

Because of this, AI systems require Boundaries.

A Boundary is a mechanism that defines:

  • how far AI is allowed to make decisions, and

  • under what conditions the decision must return to humans.

Organizations that successfully operate AI systems
always design these boundaries.

Here we introduce
seven essential boundaries required in AI systems.


1. Uncertainty Boundary

This is the most fundamental boundary.

AI predictions always contain uncertainty.

For example:

Fraud probability: 0.55
Intent detection score: 0.41

In these situations,
AI does not have sufficient confidence.

In such cases,

AI should not make a decision.

Example rule:

confidence < 0.7
→ human review

This boundary ensures that

AI stops when it does not know.


2. Impact Boundary

If the impact of a decision is large,
automation should not be used.

Examples include:

  • medical diagnosis

  • high-value financial transactions

  • contract modifications

  • account suspension

decisions with large consequences must remain human decisions.


3. Novelty Boundary

AI only understands
