Triathlon, Hawaii Island and Ironman

Triathlon is a sport that was born in Hawaii, where surfing was developed as mentioned in the previous article. Triathlon consists of swimming, biking, and running, and was first held on the west coast of the United States in 1974. It becomes a sport.

One of the most famous stories about the Ironman race is that it started when U.S. Navy servicemen were having a banquet, and they were discussing which was the toughest: long distance swimming, cycle road race, or marathon, and they decided to do them all at once. In this way, it started out as a competition of guts in a sports club atmosphere, and until it became an Olympic event, it was not a competition of time, but rather an evaluation of how hard one worked.

The Ironman race in Hawaii takes place on the Big Island of Hawaii.

The race starts and finishes in the seaside town of Kailua-Kona,

just a few kilometers from the tiny Kona Airport, the gateway to the island by air.

After a 3.8km swim in the beautiful sea, where sea turtles swim, and a change from wetsuit to bike jersey, the bikers ride the first kilometer or so up the steep hill to the highway. At the end of the climb, the cyclists turn left and ride 180km back to Kailua-Kona along the endless lava rock highway.

After the goal, you can eat a loco moco plate, which is said to have originated on the Big Island of Hawaii (although it has now become quite popular and is commonly eaten in Japan as well), at a restaurant along the road.

On the other hand, the Olympic Triathlon was introduced at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, and is a short race with a swim of 1.5km, a bike of 40km, and a run of 10km, and while the Ironman world record takes about 7 hours and 45 minutes, the world record level triathlon finishes in about 100 minutes. The world record finish time is about 100 minutes. The rules themselves are also slightly different from those of Ironman races when looked at in detail. I was involved in the movement to consider this new format and rules in the 1990s, and I remember feeling a fresh sense of surprise at the glimpse of the commercialism of the Olympics when I saw that consideration was being given to being seen (on TV). I was surprised to see the commercialism of the Olympics.

The secret to reaching the goal in a triathlon is first of all, of course, to train steadily. As with surfing last time, the primary factor will be how much time you put into it. For example, in an Ironman race, it takes the average person 9 to 12 hours to reach the finish line, and after competing for such a long time, there is always a moment when you lose focus and motivation. If you are not able to recover your motivation by the end of the race, you will end up in a state of mental and physical ruin.

This kind of motivation control has become increasingly important in the world of sports in recent years. For example, top athletes who aim to set records in international competitions hire professional coaches to train them to maintain a clear goal image at all times. In order to maintain performance, it is important to maintain the mental aspect, and this is a principle that applies to all aspects of life, not just sports.
