Setouchi International Art Festival

The Setouchi Triennale is an international contemporary art festival held on the islands of the Seto Inland Sea.

The main venues, Naoshima and Teshima, have permanent museums and exhibits. Naoshima is a small island with a circumference of 27.8 km and a population of about 4,000, located 20 minutes by ferry from Uno Port in Okayama and one hour by ferry from Takamatsu Port. Here, Yayoi Kusama’s art has been installed near the quay at the ferry terminal, and

The Naoshima Benesse Hotel, designed by Tadao Ando, is an art museum and hotel that attracts many guests from abroad, making it difficult to make reservations.

This is also the famous Chichu Art Museum, a museum buried underground, designed by Tadao Ando.

The Lee Ufan Museum of Art is a collaboration between internationally acclaimed artist Lee Ufan and architect Tadao Ando, who is currently active mainly in Europe.

There are only six rooms in the Naoshima Benesse Hotel, in the Opal building, which is accessed by cable car from the reception, restaurant, and museum zones.

You can enjoy the ultimate island travel experience.

The popular spy novel “007: The Man with the Red Tattoo” was published in 2003, and there was talk of making it into a movie, and various efforts were made to attract the film. 2003 saw the release of the 007 movie “Die Another Day” starring Piers Brosenan, and the next 007 movie was also a reboot of a past movie, with Daniel Craig replacing 007. Unfortunately, the next 007 movie was a reboot of a past movie (the 2006 Daniel Craig movie was “Casino Royale,” a reboot of the 1967 movie), and the movie adaptation was abandoned. A novel based on this story was published by Keisuke Matsuoka under the title “James Bond Never Comes.

Teshima, the other main venue, is a 40-minute ferry ride from Uno Port, a 30-minute ride from Takamatsu Port, and a 20-minute ride from Naoshima, an even smaller island with a circumference of 18 km and a population of about 1,500.

The largest structure on Teshima is the Teshima Art Museum, which will be a building that blends into its environment, embedded in a small hill on Teshima.

The concept of the Teshima Art Museum is “The ‘matrix’ of the Teshima Art Museum is a ‘fountain’ with water gushing out from everywhere throughout the day. The light from the two openings, the wind, the birdsong, the rain, snow, and insects, sometimes all combine and resonate with each other, constantly conveying an infinite variety of expressions to the viewer. When we quietly sit in the space and feel the harmony with nature, we will feel the joy of life on earth. The title of the exhibition is “The Joy of Life on Earth”.

All of the exhibits are designed primarily to be experienced, and even here at the Teshima Art Museum, visitors can experience the relaxing island time of the Seto Inland Sea.

Leaving the island and returning to Takamatsu, visitors can visit the museum of Isamu Noguchi, one of the most famous sculptors of the 20th century, whose activities range from the design of gardens and parks to furniture, lighting, and interior design, to stage design.

Tours are available for one hour each at 10:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. Visitors must apply in advance by visiting the Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum website and sending a return postcard to specify the date and time.

Isamu Noguchi is also famous for his huge works, such as the Moerenuma Park in Hokkaido

It will be a good experience to see a group of completed and unfinished works in a small space that can only be seen here.

Takamatsu (Kagawa Prefecture) is also famous for its Sanuki udon noodles. Sanuki udon is characterized by its firmness, but another feature is that it can be eaten as self-service udon.

Self-service udon means that you choose udon noodles and ingredients in a bowl, as shown in the picture above.

In Kagawa, it is a relatively popular form of udon, which is boiled and eaten with one’s own hands. Recently, Sanuki udon has become a popular dish at nationwide chain restaurants such as “Marugame Seimen” and “Hanamaru,” but it would be interesting to try the real Sanuki udon.

There are many islands in the Seto Inland Sea. Miyajima, a World Heritage site; Shimanami Kaido, a bicycle tour; Shodoshima, a food guide; ……, an introduction to art on Naoshima and Teshima; and Oyamazumi Shrine, known as the “Shosoin of the Sea,” to name a few. The appeal of the Seto Inland Sea is that you can enjoy island hopping from island to island.
