The Duel on the Potted Planet

One afternoon, I glanced at a flowerpot in my garden.
And there, I found a small world.
A tiny tree.
Small patches of grass.
Soil and fallen leaves.
And two inhabitants.
Ultraman Leo and Nova.
A red warrior and a crimson monster stood facing each other in silence.
As if they were moments away from a final duel.
At that instant, the flowerpot before me no longer looked like a flowerpot.
It looked like a planet.
What Does AI See?
Modern AI has become remarkably good at image recognition.
If I showed this photograph to an AI system, it would probably describe it as:
- Action figures
- Plants
- Soil
- A flowerpot
- An outdoor setting
And it would not be wrong.
Those objects are indeed present in the image.
But humans do something slightly different.
We do not merely recognize what is there.
We discover meaning.
Leo and Nova
Fans of Japanese tokusatsu immediately recognize these two characters.
On the left stands Ultraman Leo.
On the right is Nova, the mysterious saucer creature.
They are not merely red plastic figures.
They carry stories.
Leo is a solitary warrior.
He lost his homeland.
He lost his comrades.
Yet he continued to fight to protect Earth.
Nova represents one of the symbolic enemies from the later part of Leo’s journey, evoking memories of his long and difficult battles.
That is why we do not simply see figures.
We see the stories behind them.
The World Is Built from Meaning
This may be one of the most interesting differences between AI and humans.
AI recognizes.
Humans generate meaning.
We look at a flowerpot.
Yet we see a forest.
A planet.
A civilization.
A war.
A peace treaty.
A friendship.
We are capable of imagining things that do not physically exist before us.
And those imaginings shape the world.
When we think about it, human society itself works this way.
Nations.
Companies.
Money.
Laws.
Trust.
Reputation.
None of these are purely physical objects.
They are shared meanings.
Society itself is a vast network of meaning.
Stories Create an Intelligence Field
The Decision Trace Model (DTM) was originally conceived as a framework for recording decisions.
But its essence is not the record itself.
What truly matters is the flow of meaning:
What was observed?
How was it interpreted?
How did that interpretation lead to a decision?
This flow becomes a Knowledge Flow.
And when that flow is shared across humans, AI systems, organizations, and society, it forms what we may call an Intelligence Field.
Intelligence does not exist solely inside individual minds.
It emerges from a space where meanings flow, are shared, and are continuously reinterpreted.
The Duel on the Potted Planet
The same principle applies to this photograph.
An AI sees:
Figures.
Plants.
A flowerpot.
Physical objects.
Humans see something more.
Leo becomes a warrior.
Nova becomes an adversary.
The plants become a forest.
The flowerpot becomes a planet.
At that moment, the world ceases to be a collection of objects.
It becomes a world of meaning.
One person sees a duel.
Another sees a reunion.
Another sees reconciliation.
And someone else may imagine an entire civilization on a tiny planet.
Interpretations travel from person to person.
They are shared.
They are transformed.
New meanings emerge.
This is Knowledge Flow in action.
A Small Universe
Of course, in reality, this is merely a flowerpot and a pair of figures.
But within the Intelligence Field, it becomes something else.
There are warriors.
There are enemies.
There is history.
There is civilization.
There is a future.
A story is not the act of describing something that does not exist.
A story is the discovery of new relationships of meaning within the world.
Since ancient times, humanity has built civilizations through this ability.
We created myths.
We created nations.
We created markets.
We created companies.
We created science.
All of them began as shared stories.
Intelligence is not merely the ability to recognize the world.
It is the ability to give meaning to the world, share that meaning with others, and create new realities from it.
That is why, even when looking at a small flowerpot, we can discover an entire planet.
The next time you step into your garden, take a moment to look at a flowerpot beneath your feet.
You may find a planet that no one has yet discovered.
And a story that no one has yet told.
Quietly waiting to come alive.
