We often assume that intelligence grows continuously.

Knowledge increases a little.

More people join.

AI becomes slightly more capable.

And performance gradually improves.

But nature does not always work that way.

Sometimes, the properties of a system change suddenly.

Water turns into ice.

Magnets become magnetized.

Lasers begin to oscillate.

These are all examples of what physics calls phase transitions.

And perhaps intelligence and organizations undergo similar transformations.

What Is a Phase Transition?

Water changes from liquid to solid at 0°C.

Before and after the transition, the molecules themselves do not change.

What changes are the relationships among the molecules.

Elements that once moved independently suddenly become organized.

A new order emerges.

The important point is that although the underlying change is continuous, the change in properties is discontinuous.

Complex systems often possess such critical points.

From Individual Intelligence to Collective Intelligence

We have traditionally understood intelligence as an individual capability.

Talented people.

Powerful AI systems.

Large models.

But from the perspective of the Intelligence Field, what matters is not individuals but relationships.

Things impossible for one person become possible when many people cooperate.

New capabilities emerge when humans and AI work together.

And when certain thresholds are crossed, entirely new properties appear.

That is collective intelligence.

Collective Intelligence Does Not Emerge Gradually

Organizations work in much the same way.

Initially, individuals operate independently.

Information is fragmented.

Experiences are not shared.

Trust is insufficient.

But gradually,

knowledge accumulates,

connections form,

experience circulates,

and trust develops.

Then, at some point,

the organization begins to function as a unified intelligence.

A new property appears that transcends the abilities of individual members.

Collective intelligence is not simply the sum of knowledge.

Perhaps it is an emergent phenomenon produced by a phase transition.

We may call this phenomenon:

Intelligence Phase Transition.

Intelligence does not merely increase continuously.

Beyond certain critical thresholds, it changes qualitatively.

And those thresholds are determined not by computational power alone, but by the density of relationships, including:

  • Number of agents
  • Trust
  • Knowledge
  • Coordination
  • Shared context
  • Experience

The essence of intelligence, therefore, lies not in the performance of individuals, but in the structure of relationships.

Multi-Agent Systems Are Searching for Critical Points

AI is evolving from single models to multi-agent systems.

Research Agents.

Execution Agents.

Monitoring Agents.

Evaluation Agents.

Human Agents.

Each performs specialized roles and collaborates with others.

Yet many systems today remain little more than task decomposition frameworks.

What is truly interesting is the possibility that, beyond some threshold, intelligence greater than the sum of individual agents may emerge.

Perhaps today’s multi-agent research is fundamentally an attempt to discover the critical points at which collective intelligence appears.

Trust Is the Medium of Phase Transition

Trust plays a central role.

No matter how many agents exist, if they cannot trust one another, they remain merely a collection.

Knowledge without sharing creates no value.

Experience without propagation creates no learning.

Trust is the medium that binds individuals together.

Knowledge Infrastructure supports knowledge.

Decision Trace Model supports experience.

Trust Infrastructure supports relationships.

Together, these enable the Intelligence Field to cross a critical threshold and acquire new properties.

Perhaps collective intelligence itself is a phase transition driven by trust.

Runtime Society as a Society of Phase Transitions

In the information age, quantity mattered.

More knowledge meant more value.

But in the age of AI, what matters is not quantity.

It is relationships.

Human to AI.

AI to AI.

Organization to organization.

Community to community.

As these relationships become denser,

shared context emerges,

experience circulates,

trust develops,

and eventually society itself crosses a critical point.

A new form of intelligence appears.

If this is true, Runtime Society is not a completed society.

It is a society that repeatedly undergoes phase transitions, evolving toward higher forms of collective intelligence.

And perhaps the evolution of multi-agent systems that we are witnessing today is not simply about increasing the number of AI systems.

Perhaps humans and AI together are searching for the next critical point of intelligence.

That may be what we mean by

a new way of understanding intelligence in the age of Runtime Society.
