For a long time, we have thought of intelligence as a property of individuals.
Brilliant people.
Powerful AI systems.
Larger models.
More knowledge.
Higher IQ.
Under this view, intelligence is assumed to reside inside the individual.
But is that really true?
Looking back at the history of physics, we find a remarkably similar shift.
It was the transition from particles to fields.
Fields Are More Fundamental Than Particles
Classical physics once viewed the universe as being composed of particles.
Electrons.
Protons.
Photons.
Each was considered an independent entity that constituted reality.
Modern physics, however, reversed this perspective.
The fundamental entities are not particles, but fields.
Electron fields.
Electromagnetic fields.
The Higgs field.
Particles are merely excitations of these underlying fields.
In other words, electrons themselves are not fundamental.
The electron field is.
Particles are simply local manifestations of fields.
Are Humans and AI Also Excitations?
What happens if we apply the same perspective to intelligence?
An entirely different picture emerges.
We usually assume that humans and AI possess intelligence.
But perhaps the opposite is true.
Perhaps intelligence does not exist inside humans or AI.
Perhaps humans and AI are local excitations emerging from an underlying Intelligence Field.
In that sense, the essence of intelligence lies not in individuals, but in relationships.
Meaning Emerges Through Relationships
Ludwig Wittgenstein argued that the meaning of words lies in their use.
Meaning does not exist inside words themselves.
Meaning emerges through relationships among people.
Terrence Deacon argued that meaning arises from absence.
Francisco Varela viewed cognition through the relationship between body and environment.
Evan Thompson similarly argued that mind is not confined within the brain.
What these perspectives share is a common insight:
Intelligence and meaning emerge not from isolated individuals, but from relationships.
What Is an Intelligence Field?
An Intelligence Field is not simply a collection of knowledge.
Nor is it merely a collection of people.
Nor a collection of AI models.
It is a relational space formed through interactions among:
- Humans
- AI systems
- Organizations
- Communities
- Knowledge
- Experience
- Trust
- Purposes
Intelligence emerges from these interactions.
It does not arise solely from an individual’s brain.
Nor from a single AI model.
Through dialogue.
Through coordination.
Through shared experience.
Through trust.
Intelligence appears as an emergent phenomenon.
This is the idea of the Intelligence Field.
Agents as Excitations of the Intelligence Field
AI is entering the age of agents.
Research Agents.
Execution Agents.
Monitoring Agents.
Evaluation Agents.
Human Agents.
But are agents themselves the true carriers of intelligence?
Borrowing from field theory, perhaps agents are merely local excitations of the Intelligence Field.
They appear when needed.
Perform their roles.
Disappear.
And other agents emerge.
The important thing is not the individual agents.
What matters is the field that generates them.
Agents may simply be temporary manifestations of the Intelligence Field.
Trust Stabilizes the Field
For any field to exist, something must sustain it.
Organizations are no different.
If people do not trust one another,
if experience is not shared,
if knowledge does not circulate,
if purposes diverge,
the field itself collapses.
Knowledge Infrastructure supports memory.
Decision Trace Model supports experience.
Trust Infrastructure supports relationships.
Only when these exist together can the Intelligence Field remain stable.
Trust is not merely trust in individuals.
Trust is the force that stabilizes the field.
Runtime OS as a System for Maintaining the Intelligence Field
Traditional operating systems manage CPUs and memory.
Runtime OS, however, manages something different.
Context.
Experience.
Trust.
Coordination.
Purpose.
Knowledge.
In other words,
Runtime OS manages the Intelligence Field itself.
Perhaps Runtime OS is an operating system designed to maintain the Intelligence Field.
Runtime Society as a Society of Intelligence Fields
In the past, individuals were considered the central actors of society.
In the age of AI, many assume AI models will become the new center.
But perhaps neither humans nor AI are truly fundamental.
Perhaps what matters most is the field that emerges between them.
Intelligence is not the capability of individuals.
Intelligence is a phenomenon emerging from relationships.
Humans.
AI.
Agents.
Communities.
All of them may simply be excitations appearing and disappearing within the Intelligence Field.
And Runtime Society may be the large-scale system that continuously maintains and evolves this field.
If so, the fundamental question of the AI era changes.
Not:
“How can we build smarter AI?”
But rather:
“What kind of Intelligence Field do we want to cultivate?”
Perhaps that is the direction toward which Chinoba is ultimately moving.
