Possible World Trace — Is Decision-Making the Collapse of Futures?

We usually think of decision-making as the process of choosing the “correct answer.”

But is that really true?

With the rise of generative AI, a new reality is emerging.

Multiple proposals can be generated.

Multiple strategies can coexist.

Multiple futures can be imagined.

As this becomes commonplace, the very notion of a single correct answer begins to lose its certainty.

Perhaps decision-making is not about discovering one predetermined truth.

Perhaps it is the act of realizing one future out of many possible futures.

This perspective is not about applying quantum mechanics itself.

Nor is it about quantum computing.

What is interesting here is the concept of superposition of possibilities, which quantum mechanics offers as a metaphor.

Multiple Futures Exist Before a Decision

We tend to think that only one future exists.

In reality, before every important decision, many possibilities coexist.

Change jobs.

Stay at the current company.

Launch a new business.

Invest.

Wait.

All of these futures are potentially realizable.

Before a decision is made, the world does not consist of a single future.

It consists of many overlapping futures.

Decision as the Collapse of Possibilities

In quantum mechanics, before observation, a system is not in one definite state.

Multiple states coexist simultaneously.

Observation causes one state to become reality.

Of course, human decision-making is not explained by quantum mechanics.

But conceptually, there is a remarkable similarity.

Before a decision, multiple futures exist.

Through a decision, one of them becomes reality.

In this sense, decision-making is the process through which possibilities collapse into actuality.

The Limits of Event Logs

Most systems today are based on event logs.

What happened?

Who executed it?

What was the outcome?

However, there is a fundamental limitation.

Event logs record only what actually happened.

The futures that did not happen disappear.

Rejected ideas.

Abandoned strategies.

Alternative scenarios.

Unchosen possibilities.

None of them are preserved.

Yet perhaps the most valuable question is not merely:

“What happened?”

but also:

“What could have happened?”

From DTM to Possible World Trace

But perhaps the next evolution is not about recording events.

It is about recording possibilities.

For example:

Situation

Evaluation

Decision

Decision-making is the process of evaluating multiple futures and selecting one of them.

And the futures that were not chosen may also contain valuable knowledge.

Perhaps DTM will evolve beyond event logs into something we might call:

Possible World Trace.

Counterfactual Knowledge

Human beings do not learn only from what actually happened.

We constantly ask:

“What would have happened if we had chosen differently?”

This is known as counterfactual thinking.

Organizations do the same.

What if we had used a different pricing strategy?

What if we had hired someone else?

What if we had invested elsewhere?

Learning does not come only from realized outcomes.

It also comes from unrealized possibilities.

Experience includes both.

Leibniz and Possible Worlds

In the seventeenth century, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz introduced the idea of possible worlds.

According to Leibniz, God selected the best world from among infinitely many possible worlds.

Modern modal logic similarly views reality not as a single state, but as a set of possible states.

From this perspective, decision-making becomes the exploration of possible worlds.

Execution becomes the process through which one possible world is realized.

AI as a Possible World Generator

Today, generative AI is mainly used as a system for producing answers.

But perhaps its deeper role is different.

AI may be a machine for generating possible worlds.

Different strategies.

Different interpretations.

Different scenarios.

Different futures.

AI is not simply an answer generator.

It is becoming an explorer of possibilities.

And the role of humans is not merely to consume answers.

It is to decide which future should become reality.

Runtime Society as a Society That Selects Futures

The information society was largely a society for recording the past.

Accumulating data.

Preserving logs.

Storing knowledge.

But in the age of AI, what matters increasingly is the future itself.

Generating possibilities.

Evaluating alternatives.

Aligning purposes.

Selecting which futures to realize.

If this is true, then Runtime Society is not merely a society that accumulates knowledge.

It is a society that continuously selects futures.

And perhaps Decision Trace Model itself will evolve.

From a mechanism for recording the past,

into a system capable of handling possible worlds.

From Event Logs

to

Possible World Trace.

At that point, the central question will no longer be:

“What happened?”

but rather:

“What could happen?”
